Let’s discover a little history about the Kearney Dog Sled Races together. Over 20 years ago, in a tiny community approximately 2 1/2 hours North of Toronto, a small group of individuals got together to begin the tradition of the Kearney Winterfest (now known as Kearney Dog Sled Races)..
Kearney was originally a logging town and those roads paved the way for the dog sled race trails and continue to do so today. Even back 20 years ago, there was enthusiastic support for the annual event from local residents, cottagers, business and of course mushers! For the past 20 years, The Kearney Winterfest (Kearney Dog Sled Races) has been a member of the Ontario Federation of Sled Dog Sports and 20 years ago the race was affiliated with the Quad Crown.
In its’ first year running, Kearney hosted a 4 mile 4 dog race, a 6 mile 6-dog race and the ever exciting 30-mile 8-dog race. That first year hosted 24 teams from all over Ontario and the prize purse for the first year of the races was a total of $3,000.00.
