The Greg Alexanian 2 Dog Sled Class
The Kearney Dog Sled Races Committee would like to announce the 1st Annual Greg Alexanian Memorial 2 Dog Sled Class. This will be a sprint racing class on a 2 mile course through a shorter cut off within our 4 mile sled trail. All races begin and finish in Downtown Kearney, Ontario. The race will be run on both Saturday and Sunday of Race weekend. Racers will have the option of running 2 dogs on Race Marshall approved kick sleds (with a sled bag, a snow hook, a brush bow, and a break) or sprint racing sleds. Racing this class with 1 dog MAY be permitted with prior approval of the Race Marshall upon determining the experience of the driver and the ability of the dog.
Greg Alexanian was a member of the Kearney Dog Sled Races Committee, who will be sorely missed by this Committee, and by the Community as a whole. His sense of humour and laugh were infectious and the only thing bigger than his smile was his heart. Greg was always trying to better this race and brought a high level of energy to the committee. We felt it only fitting to name this new and exciting class in Greg's honour as he was always trying to bring new faces to this race. We hope to be able to offer this class for many years to come.
CLASS DIVISIONS AND PRIZES
This race is divided into 3 sub-classes who will all take off in start-sheet order on both Saturday and Sunday of the race weekend. Musher start times are determined on Friday night's bib draw.
Open Division: This is for competitive racers and more seasoned racers who wish to test them and their dogs' skills! ALL Are welcome to race this class, even if it is your FIRST time, we only ask that racers ensure that their dogs are able to pass and be passed by other teams on the trail. Kicksleds are NOT permitted.
Registered Northern Breed Division: RNB is also a competitive class, where only registered northern breed dog teams may be entered. Proof of registration may be requested. Kicksleds are NOT permitted.
Sportsmen Division: This class is for anyone just starting out, and may actually be in their first-ever race. Kicksleds with a brush bow, a snow hook, and a working break are permitted. There will be ribbons awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place sportsmen teams.
For New and Novice Racers
The KDSR Committee is excited to introduce this class as an opportunity for novice and new racers to dip their boots into the snowy trails of the racing world. Please note that although this is a sportsman class, ALL RACERS are still expected to attend the mushers meeting each race morning. Please see the race day schedule for further information. Please also reach out to the committee if you have any questions.
We also take great pride in having an exceptional community of seasoned racers who attend our event. Should you need support or assistance on race day, please reach out to a volunteer on race day at any time. We would be happy to assist you and your dog having the most fun and successful race experience as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Committee through email at info@kearneydogsledraces.ca, or through our Facebook page. We are always happy to speak with mushers and will answer as quickly as we are able.
Registration closes Monday before race weekend.
